How To Travel To Versailles Frugally

Versailles Train Station

Versailles Train Station 1

You can get to Versailles by many bus and private tours but going it on your own (being so close to Paris) makes an easy and fun day out while also saving you some cash!

As of June 2008,
I think the best way to daytrip to Versailles is
with the combined train/entrance ticket
offered by the SNCF(National Railway company).
They have a pass called a Forfait Loisirs Ch√Ęteau de Versailles
which gives full admission + round trip transportation to/from central Paris.
It allows you to go to a separate entrance for ticket holders
(big advantage as the day we went
the ticket line was probably a hour long
while we got inside within 10 min!)
and all the main attractions and audioguide are included.
On the weekend they operate the fountains
and charge extra
but it’s worth the price difference in summer.

Frugal Travel Tip:

The pass also includes metro to the main train station
(Montparnasse/St. Lazare) where you get the Versailles train.
We assumed it to be only 2 tickets
but got at least 4+ metro rides out of it
so keep using it until it really runs out!
