Rockwork Grove At Versailles
If I could see only one fountain show at Versailles,
it would be the Rockwork Grove.
It was known as ‘the ballroom’
due to the marble floor
once taking up the center of the grove.
There would have been dancing
with seats for the non-dancers on the tiers
near the entrance.
The fountain part of the semi-circle
has rockwork cascades
and gilt-lead vases
(designed by Laconte and Le Hongre)
where the musicians stood.
The giant candlestands
(designed by Le Gros, Mazeline and Jouvenet)
must have been awe-inspiring
when holding lit candelabra.
Get to the Grove early
as it is small
and fills up quickly.
