The Guard Room, Versailles

The Guard Room Ceiling Versailles

The Guard Room

Due to the functional aspect of this room (it was formerly one of the chateau’s chapels), the marble decorations, completed in 1681 - two years before Marie-Therese’s death, have been preserved.

The paintings by Noel Coypel praising Jupiter come from the former King’s Grand Cabinet (which was converted into the War Drawing Room when the Hall Of Mirrors was built).

Under the Ancien Regime, the room was cluttered with racks for the guard’s arms, campbeds and sedan chairs. It was here that on the morning of October 6, 1789, guards lost their lives helping Marie-Antoinette seek refruge by the King’s side.
