Avalon Veterans Memorial Park is right close to the dock.
The memorial says…
This memorial is dedicated
to all veterans - men and
women - who have served
their country in harm’s way
In all branches of
the armed forces
of the
United States Of America

Descanso Beach is around the bend
past the Casino.
It is open to the public but at a fee ($2.00 per person).
Though when we went,
there was no one policing that.
Outside food and beverages are not allowed.
Frankly, I don’t think it was worth the walk.
Lovers Cove is closer and about as nice
(both are pebbled beaches, not sandy).

Sunset Magazine calls Catalina Island a ‘geographic anomaly.’
Why?
California’s other seven Channel Islands broke away from the mainland
(the whole California is falling into the sea thing).
Catalina Island was formed by the upward heave of tectonic plates.
