Invisible Hands of the Pond

In ancient Hawaiian times, the fishpond was of great importance to the people since fish was a major source of protein. Though it belonged to royalty, some of the species of fish were used by commoners. Kapu (forbidden) was used to protect and preserve the pond and its surroundings. Two guardian spirits, ‘aumakua, protected the pond. According to some Niumalu residents, the guardians were royal children who possessed supernatural powers. At times, the sister, Kalalalehua changed into a mo’o (lizard) and ‘Alekoko, the brother, took the form of a mano (shark).

Life on the Pond

Long ago, the smaller fish were raised separately by a keeper, until large enough to live in the open pond. Now reproduction of fish takes place within the roots of a foreign plant, the mangrove, which entwines itself into the rock wall. Though good for the fish the mangrove threatens the life of the pond. The roots tear the wall apart while it imbeds itself into the foundation.

I love the black lava rock coastline of some stretches of Kauai. The contrast of blue water, whitecaps and black rock is striking.
