Le Monument du Centenaire (Centennial Monument)
is located on La Promenade des Anglais
in the corner of the Jardin Albert 1er.
It bears the dates 1793-1893,
and commemorates
declaring Nice a part of France.
Sculpted by Joseph Allar (1845-1925) ,
it is topped by Nikaïa,
the Greek goddess of victory and messenger of the gods.
The sculpture at the base
shows Nice embracing France.
Again, free for the frugal traveler to gaze at.

Further along the La Promenade des Anglais
in the L’Esplanade du Paillon ou Espace Massena
is a bronze sculpture of a Jaguar with a Hare.
Quite a bloodthirsty scene
but brilliantly rendered.
Again free for the frugal traveler to see.

Walking down the La Promenade des Anglais
along the waterfront,
you’ll see a wonderful two story carousel ride
in the L’Esplanade du Paillon ou Espace Massena.
It costs to ride the carousel
but it is absolutely free to watch.
