Tourist Information
There is tourist information in a large building by the statue of the wild stag along the Olas Altas Promenade (waterfront) in Mazatlan. The bathrooms in the building are clean. There is filtered water to refill water bottles. The staff are friendly and helpful. Well worth the stop.

Pedro, The Tortoise
This tortoise was walking (very slowly) in a yard in Mazatlan. While I was snapping photos through the gate, a girl living there came home. She very nicely brought the tortoise closer for photos and told us his name was Pedro.

Angela Peralta Theater

This neo-classical gem is one of the few 19th century theaters still in operation in northwestern Mexico. It was built and named for businessman Manuel Rubio by engineer Andres Librado Tapia and its grand opening took place in February of 1874. For more than a century, the Angela Peralta has done service as an opera house and theater, a circus, boxing arena, cantina and cinema. And it also hosted school ceremonies, vaudeville performances, burlesque shows and annual Carnival events before being closed down for 30 years.

In the early 1940’s, the theater was renamed in honor of ‘The Mexican Nightingale,’ Angela Peralta, an internationally-known homegrown diva who died of yellow fever shortly before her scheduled Mazatlan performance in 1882. Her tragic death had a powerful impact on the city’s cultural history and on the theater itself which underwent long years of restoration before its triumphant re-opening in 1992.

Stone Island is a resort type getaway from Mazatlan. There’s a beach and some (rather poor) snorkeling. Water Taxis can be taken a short walk from the cruise ships and cost $2 U.S. per person roundtrip. Although there is transport offered upon arrival at Stone Island (for a fee), the island is small and the walk to the beach is short. Once at the beach, there are chairs and water sport equipment for rental. There are, of course, the usual vendors selling just about everything.
